RAW Artists: A Showcase of Art, Fashion, and Music

On Thursday night, the Andaz Hotel in downtown San Diego allowed its nightclub, Ivy, to be transformed into so much more than a dance club or lounge. RAW: Natural Born Artists took over for a night of live performances, showcases, and just an overall appreciation of the time, energy, and genius creativity that artists bring to the table. Descending the spiral staircase into the club, one was greeted by photographs hung from strings attached to the ceiling, and full sized paintings lined almost every wall. The heavy bass of dance music was prominent, but once the clock struck 8:30, live performers took the stage to the audience’s delight. From a socially-conscious performance that fused spoken word with hip-hop, to comedienne Jiavani Linayao who did not just tell her jokes, but sang them, the event was incredibly diverse in the best way possible.

Sarah Wilwerding, RAW’s location director for the San Diego area, was eager to explain what makes RAW so special. She explained the group as a “family, and a great resource for these artists”. RAW provides a venue for networking opportunities for their artists in addition to the showcases like the event at Ivy, where the artists can promote and sell their work. She described it as a network of artists helping artists, but they also help the local community, with monthly Boys and Girls Club “Artist Workshops” that promote the importance of art for our community’s youth.

Even without all the wonderful things that RAW does for independent artists and local charities, the event is an amazing thing to experience in itself. Artist Seth Shelman’s graffiti-style Vans slip-on’s were beautiful, eye-catching, and hand-drawn with fabric markers and dyes. His designs caught the attention of Vans itself and some of his work is on permanent display in their flagship stores! He is also a painter, and his canvases decorated the walls next to his displayed shoes. You can find his brand, Psykey, online as well as more information about his work.

Seth and fellow artist Sean Dietrich were favorites among the crowd. Sean, who creates his vivid works primarily in front of crowds, was one of the first live painters in San Diego. His paintings are influenced by anything and everything; from World War II to thoughts of growing old. He is currently working on a series of 52 paintings, each featuring a similar girl with large, innocent, doll eyes juxtaposed against very dark and intense backgrounds. Sean was also promoting his newest book “I Brought the Gutter”, which offers a glimpse into his life as a live painter. Guests Mariah and Tyler, who had never been to a RAW show were very impressed with Sean’s ‘Tim Burton-esque’ paintings and insisted that they would be checking out more of these shows in the future.

One of the highlights of the night was the hip-hop group Kobra Kai. With the final scenes of ‘The Karate Kid’ playing behind the stage, this group of guys from LA and San Diego performed up beat and catchy hip hop alongside bongos, drums, and (of all things) a trumpet. The crowd went wild for this group, and a couple of B-Boys decided to show off their moves at the end of the group's set.

Closing out the night was a fashion show from jewelry designer Shay and her Moonlit Jewelry collection. Originally from Detroit, Shay came to sunny San Diego about two and a half years ago. Her designs are goddess inspired and the pieces are meant to make women feel beautiful. All hand-made by Shay herself, the designs range from funky feathered earrings to bejeweled snake arm bands. The first model from Moonlit wore a gorgeous silver stranded necklace with too many layers to count. Another stunning piece was a jeweled anklet that wrapped around the ankle and down the top of the foot. If you are going to be barefoot this summer, your feet need to be in top shape and this amazing designer has provided tools to make that happen. Another trend in the Moonlit Jewelry collection was the backwards necklace. Instead of draping down the model’s neck, one of the silver and gold pieces was flipped around to drip down her back. Gorgeous.

If you were unfortunate enough to miss this amazing event, fear not. They take place the last Thursday of every month from February though October, and they are constantly featuring new artists. For those who would like to check out a show in another city, visit their website for all the locations, dates, and times

Illustration Friday ~ LESSON

One thing I have learned as the mother of three boys, is that every day spent with them is a LESSON learned. Sometimes you just have to trust your gut, sometimes you just have to trust them. But however you slice it, I know that I have learned as much, if not more, from my boys as they have learned from me.

I encourage you to visit the Illustration Friday website, follow the links and find all of the wonderful artwork and blogs.

Her Morning Elegance

Friday Muse
TREND Writer: Lavanya Kumar

Featuring the artistic abilities of Oren Lavie, the music video titled "Her Morning Elegance" portrays the emotions, actions, and thoughts of a young woman performing aspects of everyday life. The specific "stop motion" style, the main focus of the video, evokes a sense of nostalgia in the viewer as it seems to slow and even stop time, causing one to think of life just as it is, in the moment. Nominated for a Grammy in 2010, the video and its artist celebrated their achievement by displaying all 2,096 images used to make the video as a gallery.

TREE OF LIFE PAINTING

tree of life is symbolically described in the Book of Revelation as having curing properties: "the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations." (Revelation 22:1-2)

MCQUEEN FOR A FUTURE QUEEN

The entire world watched today as a middle class girl walked down the aisle and became the Duchess of Cambridge. For the fashion world, today was all about one thing, the dress! And so many played the guessing game for the past few months as the designer was kept in uttermost secrecy, with Sarah Burton being the name on everyone's lips, despite the house of McQueen denying that it would be behind the design of the dress last week.

It was a memorable fashion moment when the future queen stepped out looking beyond incredible in a stunning lace and satin dress and it was officially announced as a design by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

Keeping it simple, Kate's dress had a v-neck decollete, long lace sleeves that kept the whole gown modest, a beautiful silhouette that perfectly complimented her figure and a 2.7 meter train. She accessorised with Alexander McQueen heels and a Cartier Halo tiara, which was her "something borrowed" courtesy of the queen.
Kate's sister and maid of honour, Pippa, also wore a a gorgeous white dress by Sarah Burton. And both Pippa and Burton were there to adjust Kate's dress up to the last second before walking down the aisle.

Designer Spotlight: Isabel Marant

Now, we all know that springtime typically brings us pretty flowing dresses, pastels, espadrilles, and usu
ally some leftover chocolate bunnies. This Spring, French designer Isabel Marant chose to ignore what everyone else deemed "trendy" and went a sporty direction.

Her spring collection includes layers, lace up pants, and short-shorts. And one of her most unique colors is a sweet bubblegum pink! The best part is, her Spring 2011 collection includes tons of separates, allowing you to mix and match to create the kind of look you want. Some pieces are earthy and bohemian and others are preppy and fun. Such a mixed bag of an oh so chic collection!

Oh, Hello UCSD Students

Why hello UCSD fashionistas! You may have noticed that the vendor fair is taking place this week. If you did, make sure you stop by Danni Hong's little shop adorably called "Oh, Hello Friend"! It is a charming shop that started May 2008 as an Etsy shop. Long story short, she now has a successful and quite cozy little business! In her interview, Danni described her collection as having both a vintage and an urban feel. However, she also feels that her collection with the modern style makes it "new vintage".
She carries a wide range of accessories such as earrings, rings, vanity glasses, wallets and hair accessories. She also has an absolutely lovely selection of clothing as well.
So before this lovely lady leaves at the end of this week, stop by her little tent on Library Walk!

There are also other ways to see her collection too if you can't stop by!

Scottish Fashion Awards announce nominees

Nominees for the 6th annual Scottish Fashion Awards have been announced. Selected from leading figures in fashion and via an online nomination system open to the public, the awards will be decided upon by some of the UK's leading names in fashion including Dolly Jones, Hilary Alexander, Paula Reed, Caroline Rush and Scotland's own Richard Walker (full list below) and presented on Wednesday 15 June 2011 at the Glasgow Science Centre (see DIARY dates). The awards were established by Tessa Hartmann, Chairman and founder, in 2006 to honour and celebrate the very best of Scottish fashion - designers, photographers, models, stylists, make-up artists, fashion writers, fashion marketers. Speaking of the 2011 awards Tessa states: "It's such a thrill and honour to provide this invaluable and now global stage for the wealth of fashion talent that hails from Scotland. There is this incredible thirst for all things Scottish and fashionable, which was clearly evident in the AW collections where there was an abundance of Harris Tweed, luxurious cashmeres, hand knitting and major Scottish names competing internationally. Every year we find new gems from the young designer sector, to overseas where we scour the international fashion scene to find Scots doing well."

Wednesday Featured Fashion: Garden Party

Name
: Kayla
College: Sixth
Year: 1st
Major: Sociology
Spotted At: Sixth College Res Halls

Outfit:
Light Purple Cardigan: Uniqlo
Floral Romper: Korea
Polka Dot Bow: Etsy
Black Combat Boots: store in Melrose
Glasses: Cotton On

Q: How would you describe your fashion?
A: I would describe my style as feminine and comfortable. I just wear whatever that comes to mind that day so I don't really have a style. I just wear a mixture of all types of trends and whatever suits my taste that day.
Q: What is your favorite piece you are wearing?
A: I really like my bow because I love the polka dot print right now and it made my outfit look really feminine.
Q: What's your favorite thing about spring?
A: My favorite thing about spring is that I can finally wear pretty floral dresses and mix it with other prints.

Kayla's outfit is a perfect transition from the cold, dreary weather of winter quarter to the warm, light breezes of spring quarter. She paired a floral romper, which perfectly emulates the season's aura, with combat boots to tone down the sometimes overdone floral prints. Kayla also has used the trend of mixing/matching prints, done so with her floral and polka dots, and has successfully matched them together without clashing.

Suggestion: Spring is the perfect time to bring out your soft-toned cardigans, as Kayla did, and pair it with floral prints. It is also a really big trend this season to mix/match various types of prints so don't be afraid to try out new styles!

Model Profile: Emily DiDonato

NAME: Emily DiDonato
BORN: February 24, 1991 (20yrs)
HEIGHT: 5'10"
MODELED FOR: Guess?, Ralph Lauren, Maybelline New York, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani

As a recent high school graduate, Emily DiDonato has shot to the top of modeling in a short period of time. DiDonato was born and raised in a small town in Orange County in New York and is from Irish and Italian ancestry. The most impressive aspect of DiDonato is her quick rise to the top; she landed a commercial (1, 2) with Maybelline ("Color Sensational Lip Color" line) soon after graduating and with only a few months of modeling experience. Keep an eye out for her; it looks like she's still going strong and has no intention on stopping anytime soon.
