Father's Day Gift Ideas

Our parents will always make us wrestle our way to find out what they'd like to receive as gifts for special occassions such as their birthdays and parents days. We know better than to give in! To help you make your decision, here are a few gifts ideas for Father's Day this year:

Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology are ancient oriental wisdom handed down by our ancestors and they are living skill in use throughout the Orient for many centuries that helps enhance and harmonise the positive flows of nature within your environment. It is an ancient Chinese science that is widely used and practised all around the world today.

A graduate from Lillian Too Institute of Feng Shui (wofs), Malaysia, this Feng Shui master has been in this industry for more than 30 years.

The course will take place in Puchong, Selangor and we recommend booking at least 1 week in advance.

Fly in the sky

The skies are truly the last free open area to enjoy, and this is what the paramotor is all about. It's a most remarkable feeling to realize you are actually flying. Whether flying low or high over the beach or open fields in Pulau Indah, your dad can experience the freedom, the independence and achieve man's oldest dream - flight! Motorized paragliding is undoubtedly the least expensive form of powered flight - a day in the sky will only cost a few dollars in fuel bills.

Fly higher

Take your father into the sky and above the city with this amazing experience. Scenic tours over Kuala Lumpur are usually quite rare - with this experience you can now enjoy a panoramic view of the city! You'll board Cessna 172 for a fantastic 1 hour sightseeing trip. You'll follow a sky path right into the heart of the city - a perspective that most people rarely get to see.

Flying at 1,000 to 1,500 feet, you'll have a fantastic view of the capital's iconic landmarks, including the famous KL Tower the Petronas Twin Towers and landscape of Kuala Lumpur before heading home to land. Enjoy breathtaking views with your father.

You'll get an amazing perspective on the geography of the city and the beauty of its landmarks - and whether you are tourists or Malaysian born and bred, it will make you see the capital city in a whole new way.

Father's Day Special

I'm lucky to have parents who believe in me. When I left the rat race to start Best Events, they didn't even show a hint of worry which gave me the confidence boost I needed. When I was growing up, my mum was the strict one while my dad was the one I loved hanging out with. They were both career people but my mum's job demanded more of her. My dad who worked in an ad agency as a creative director managed to spend most of his weekends with me.

He used to take me to my music classes, dance classes and friend's parties and basically was my only mode of transport till I was 17. Our favourite things to do together were to rent books, videos and watch TV while eating all sorts of junk food. He's really hip and enjoys most of the movies and shows I enjoy. We share a passion for the more artsy films eg Big Fish and funny sitcoms eg Friends. He enjoys the latest music and is always updated on the latest trends. He's quite a dancer too!

As age catches up on him, he spends less time reading (he loves reading about the supernatural and non-fiction books) and watching TV due to a degenerative eye condition. He keeps fit jogging most evenings around his neighbourhood.

I'm guilty about not being able to spend more time with my parents since getting married. Our time together is mostly to talk about the latest happenings and catching up on our lives during our weekly lunch sessions. I realized recently how little I knew about my dad's background so I've started my dad on a new project- writing about his life. He protested and said that he wasn't a hero and who would want to read about him anyway. I told him I did and that's all that mattered. He is MY hero. He provided me with an education ( most of his pay went to paying the bills and putting me through school), showered me with love, brought our family out for short trips, brought me to parks and is always there for me. What more can a girl ask for?

It's time I got to know my dad's life, how he encountered the Japanese soldiers during World War 2 to his move from Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur to how he met my mum. We tend to take our parents for granted while everything revolves around our world. We tell them how our day went but seldom ask how theirs was.

So I hope he starts writing real soon. He's started a draft with my persistence and has even done some drawings. I look forward to reading about my dad's life no matter how ordinary he thinks it is. Papa, I know you know this but I want to say it again anyway- I love you! Happy Father's Day!

For our readers, our following post is about the many ways you can spend time with your dad (and mum!)

Ravishingly Beautiful Spa

Getaways are great for the soul but when you don't have the time to travel, a relaxing spa comes close enough. We speak to Jane from Ravissante, a spa for women, about her new heavenly spa.

How did Ravissante come about and what does the name mean?

The name Ravissante (pronounced as rah-viss-sant) means Ravishingly Beautiful, in French. It is aptly chosen because of our belief that every woman is ravishingly beautiful and it is our aim to make women beautiful, both inside and out.

What makes Ravissante different from the rest of the spas around?

Ravissante caters exclusively for women. It is a place where they can feel at home, in a very relaxing atmosphere where all our clients are our friends. We also have an extensive menu, catering from top-to-toe. There is something for everyone, whether you like to relax (spa, facials, massage) or to look better (wrinkle treatments, slimming, eyelash extensions) we at Ravissante would like to ensure that you feel better too!

What's a typical day for you?

Would you believe I have a noisy cat as an alarm clock? She'd sit there and meow every 7am, sharp! I'd go to gym then head off to the spa. Mingle with the staff, then meet the clients, get online, and before you know it, it's 7pm! Then off from the spa to meet friends or family for dinner and drinks. Lastly, my boyfriend would rock-a-by-bb me to sleep ever night!
He's a gem :)

What's the one thing you would like to change from your past?

Hmm... at this point, nothing. I believe that we are who we are because of our past. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger; as long as you learn the lesson and keep move forward!

Whats the favorite part about your job ?

My favourite part of the job is when I see results from my client's treatments. A little change in their skin like smaller pores from facials, lesser pigments or glowing radiant skin after treatment; and the smile on the client's face... its like instant gratification!

What books help you fall asleep?

Haha.. funny that you'd ask! Would you believe its celebrity gossip magazines like HOT!

If a newspaper were to feature you, what would the headline say?

Gee, I dont know! Hopefully something like "The Art of Being Beautiful"

If you were a dessert, which would you be?

A low fat mint chocolate sundae with strawberries! Definitely something to indulge in!

If you weren't a spa owner, what would you be?

I would be in corporate, heading some business unit in a multinational company!

If you could beam one message into space, what would it be?

Love yourself and be pampered at Ravissante!

Lisa Bebi's Orange Challenge

The very talented Lisa Bebi has come up with another great art challenge. (A few weeks ago I took part in Lisa's "studio fodder challenge" and had a great time creating three ATC's with fodder from Lisa's studio.) For the latest challenge Lisa posted the following on her Facebook page:

"The color orange is sometimes hard to manage as it likes to take over. The challenge is to create a 4" x 4" art piece that has orange as a supporting but important act."

My answer to the challenge is the mixed media piece pictured above. With a combination of acrylic paint, Caran d'Ache water-soluble crayon and fluid chalk inks, I give you 'One Pear.'

Journal Pages

After a morning spent planting flowers, finishing chores and working on a custom order, I found some time for journaling. Often when I've spent a week filled with home and family responsibilities, and sorely lacking in studio time, I forget how joyful it is to immerse myself in art.

Today I found such joy in an hour or so alone with my journal, water-soluble crayons and markers. It was the first time I had used Deco Color paint markers and I especially like the white extra-fine line pen. Sometimes I have a love/hate relationship with my white gel pens, and this Deco Color marker wrote over the crayon like a dream. It's a keeper.

Somerset Studio Gallery

The Summer 2010 issue of Somerset Studio Gallery has hit the newsstands and I am pleased to mention that my collage, "Star Qualities," was chosen for publication. I am very grateful to the editorial staff at Stampington for this opportunity. Seeing my artwork published never gets old; it is a joy each and every time. Additionally, I was thrilled to see that the page with my collage was used in the advertisement for the magazine, as seen at the Stampington website. I'm a happy girl.

One more time.. SATC!!

Yesterday was a day most girls waited for.. the release of the new Sex And The City movie..i sadly got shot down by the news that the UAE had decided to not show the movie.. hmm.. maybe something to do with the fact that they made it look like every female resident of Abu Dhabi is a Burqa clad woman.. Dunno?? just taking a guess..

Anywho... on to what they wore.. The ladies attended the big day at London's premiere where they wore the following:

SJP in a lace-embellished black taffeta Alexander McQueen dress from S/S 08.

Photobucket
Love level 8/10 because it's Mcqueen but i'm not feeling it on her, and as for the Philip Treacy hat, kudos to her for keeping with her crazy red carpet hat trend.. i kind of want it though.. black and lace just always screams yes for me!

Kim Cattrall in a black vintage dress by Thierry Mugler.

Photobucket
Love level 6/10, the dress is pretty but a bit on the boring side for me.. mind you i'm half her age and wouldn't project this much sex appeal in any dress.

Cynthia Nixon in a one-shoulder dress by Narciso Rodriguez.

Photobucket
Love level 7/10, i actually like this.. well the top half of the dress anyways..The colour of the dress suits her complexion and the goldy locks she's got going on there.

Kristin Davis in a vintage sequined halter dress by Norman Norell

Photobucket
Love level 4/10.. i don't like this at all!! the whole gold sequined halter thing is just not doing it for me and it feels a little tacky.. it's just my opinion, i like her, i just don't like the dress!

Photobucket
Rant: i have to get this off my chest.. im so sick of the photoshopping!! they're all above 40 and this is what they look like and it's bloody good for their age so for god's sake enough with the air brushing and liquify tool!!

Spring Bouquet - May "IT" Challenge

Spring Bouquet (13"x 17")

The "Interpret This" challenge photo for May was chosen by Libby of Creative Endeavors.
My interpretation of Libby's photo is limited to the end of one branch.
Those blossoms were "virtually picked and arranged" in one of my favorite vases ... a water globe.

The decisions I made and how I constructed my interpretation is revealed on Interpret This.  I'm one of the last members of the group to post.  So while you're there, check out the preceding interpretations for this photograph of a full blossomed tree in a park on a beautiful spring day.
