British Hairdressing Awards 2011 announce nominations

The nominees for the British Hairdressing Awards have been announced. From a selected group of industry experts, beauty journalists and international trade press, eight hairdressers have been nominated for the British Hairdresser of the Year Award.

The nominated hairdressers are:

Andrew Barton - previous winner of British Hairdresser of the Year 2006, this is Andrew’s eighth nomination.

Errol Douglas - the 15th nomination for Knightsbridge salon owner Errol Douglas, previous winner of Afro Hairdresser of the Year 1993, 1995 and 2007.

Tim Hartley - this is Tim’s second nomination.

Mark Hayes - the third nomination for Mark Hayes, International Creative Director of Sassoon.

Gary Hooker & Michael Young - this is the fourth nomination for owners of salon group Hooker & Young, collectively six times winners of North Eastern Hairdresser of the Year and Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technicians of the Year 2006.

Akin Konizi - twice winner of British Hairdresser of the year in 2008 and 2009, Artistic Director for HOB. This is Akin’s sixth consecutive nomination.

Mark Leeson - this is Nottinghamshire salon owner Mark’s first nomination. Mark is a previous Winner of Eastern Hairdresser of the Year 2004, 2005 and 2006, and Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year in 2007.

Angelo Seminara – current British Hairdresser of the Year, Angelo also won the title in 2007. He has also won Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year in 2000, 2003 and 2004.

In the British Hairdressing Awards 27 year history there have only been 15 hairdressers who have been awarded this title including Trevor Sorbie, Anthony Mascolo, Irvine and Rita Rusk, John Frieda, Andrew Collinge, Nicky Clarke, Charles Worthington, Umberto Giannini, Beverly C, Mark Hill, Antoinette Beenders, Lisa Shepherd, Andrew Barton, Akin Konizi and the current British Hairdresser of the Year Angelo Seminara.

The 2011 British Hairdressing Awards is presented by Hairdressers Journal International and sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional. The winners in all sixteen categories will be announced an awards ceremony and dinner on 28 November (See DIARYdates).


Anthony Vaccarello awarded 2011 ANDAM Fashion Award fellowship

The ANDAM Fashion Award commission has announced that its 2011 fellowship will go to Belgian designer Anthony Vaccarello. After he graduated from the La Cambre School, Anthony Vaccarello won the Grand Prix of the Hyères Fashion Festival in 2006 before working alongside Karl Lagerfeld at Fendi. Vaccarello created his first collection in January 2009 and has been showing on the Paris women’s ready-to-wear calendar since then. The €200,000 endowment of the ANDAM Fashion Award will enable him to present a collection in Paris during Ready-to-Wear Week next October and to open a French branch for his label with a studio in Paris.

The winner was been chosen by majority vote by the following members of the jury, which included Fashion professionals: Hilary Alexander of The Daily Telegraph; Emmanuelle Alt, editor in chief of Vogue Paris; and Nathalie Dufour, founder and general director of ANDAM among others.

Previous recipients of this accolade include Yvan Mispelaere, Giles Deacon, Christophe Lemaire, Martin Margiela, Viktor & Rolf, Jeremy Scott and Hakaan.

Triple Success for ASOS at Handbag.com Online Fashion Awards 2011

The Handbag.com Online Fashion Awards in association with Medwinds, were revealed this week (27 June), with online fashion store ASOS winning three awards. ASOS was announced as winners of ‘Best New Fashion Site’, ‘Best Vintage Site’ and ‘Best Online-Only Site’.

Now in its fourth year, the Handbag.com Online Fashion Awards 2011 encompass twelve categories, naming a winner and runner-up in each. A panel of handbag.com industry experts including Show Me Your Wardrobe’s Jackie Dixon, DirectorsOf.com founder Leon Bailey Green, Drapers’ online editor Keely Stocker and ASOS’ Jemma Dyas, compiled a final shortlist of the best fashion sites on the web, before putting this shortlist to the public vote. More than 47,000 votes from handbag.com users determined the overall winners.

Cosmopolitan Beauty Awards 2011 winners announced

The Cosmopolitan Beauty Awards took place this morning (29 June) at One Marylebone, London NW1. In total, the industry expert panel and celebrity judged 325 products, across 83 categories. This included 16 products which were granted the ‘Readers’ Kiss Of Approval’ award by Cosmopolitan’s 1.5 million readers who voted for their favourite products via the magazine and online.

The awards, now in their ninth year, represent the best in class for every element of beauty, from hair styling and cleansing, to skincare, toolkits and suncare.

Debut Beach Tomato Awards winners announced

The winners of its first Beach Tomato Awards have been announced today. The judging panel for the awards included co-founder Tom Marchant, editor Kirsty Hathaway and features editor Katie Mulloy together with ELLE's travel editor, Sue Ward Davies; showmeyourwardrobe.com founder and photographer, Jackie Dixon; and the threegraces.com founder and beauty journalist, Grace Timothy, who together decided the best beaches around the world, beach fashion and beachside beauty products.

Tom Marchant, co-founder, says “We created Beach Tomato to be the friendly voice offering insightful and honest advice about beaches from around the world. Our first Beach Tomato awards are an answer to the eternal question that everyone stresses about year, which beach, what to wear and which beauty brand really delivers. Editor Kirsty Hathaway and the judging panel have truly uncovered the best of the beach for 2011.”

The three different sections within the editorially led site – Promenade, Preen and Place – dictated the different award categories – Fashion, Beauty and Travel. Additionally, Beach Tomato invited users to vote for a “People’s Choice Award”.

Liz Earle wins coveted Which? Awards

The annual Which? Awards took place this week (23 June) in London and were hosted by hosted by Natasha Kaplinsky. The Online Media Awards announces winners

The Online Media Awards, recognising the best in online journalism, announced its 2011 award winners last night at a ceremony in London. The event attracted entries from websites including The Guardian, The Sun, BBC, Sunday Times, Mail Online, Reuters and The Telegraph. On the international judging panel was Andrew Jaspan, former editor of The Age, David Mill former online editor of Mirror Group, Noel Young former group managing editor of the Daily Record and Sunday Mail, Charles McGhee former editor of The Herald and Jim Chisholm former director of the World Association of Newspapers.

Named as Website of the Year and winning the Grand Prix was thesundaytimes.co.uk for its replication of its printed version online and its editor Gordon Thomson was named Online Editor of the Year. In all, sundaytimes.co.uk took home six awards.

PPA Awards 2011 winners announced

The winners of The PPA Awards 2011 were revealed at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Mayfair’s Park Lane on June 15. Hosted by comedian Kevin Bridges, the PPA Awards brought together more than 1,000 guests from the UK’s consumer and business media companies to celebrate editorial and publishing excellence. A total of 22 awards were handed out on the night following two rounds of judging by 142 independent judges.

Guy Kremer & Charlie Le Mindu to show at 2011 L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final

On 4 July the 2011 L’Oréal Professional Colour Trophy Grand Final will take place at Grosvenor House, London. The audience will see 42 grand finalist salon teams from across the UK take their talent to the catwalk before finding out the 2011 winners. There will also be two shows from renowned stlists Guy Kremer and Charlie Le Mindu.

Awards up for grabs include the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Award and L’Oréal Professionnel Men’s Image Award alongside the Mizani Afro Catwalk Award and the L’Oreal Professionnel Young Colourist Award. The event will be also be shown across the internet via Facebook and Youtube the following day (5 July).

Scottish Fashion Awards 2011 winners announced

The 2011 Scottish Fashion Awards (in association with VOGUE.COM) took place last night at Glasgow Science Centre. Samantha Cameron, in her role as Ambassador to the British Fashion Council, attended the event and presented the evening’s most prestigious award - ‘Scottish Fashion Designer of the Year 2011’ to Jonathan Saunders.

Hosted by MTV’s Laura Whitmore, awards were given to Harris Tweed Hebrides, Tali Lennox, Henrietta Ludgate, Henry Holland, Bebaroque and Rankin, who received the Hall of Fame 2011 award. Guests and judges in attendance on the night included Dolly Jones, editor of Vogue.com; Nathalie Colin, Creative Director of Swarovski; Hilary Alexander, fashion director of The Daily Telegraph; Paula Reed, style director at Grazia; Sarah Bailey, deputy editor of Harpers Bazaar; Eilidh McAskill, editor of InStyle; Richard Walker, editor of Sunday Herald; Professor Wendy Dagworthy and Brian Duffy President of Ralph Lauren Europe.

Fashion and Beauty luminaries named in Queen's Birthday Honours

Several figures from the fashion and beauty industry have been recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list, released last weekend (10 June). These include Celia Birtwell, who has been awarded an CBE for services to the fashion industry along with Nicholas Robertson, Chief Executive of ASOS.com, who received an OBE. Thea Green (pictured above), founder of Nails Inc. received an MBE for services to the beauty industry, while renowned fashion journalist Sarah Mower also received this honour for her service to the fashion industry. Fashion and travel site Beach Tomato launches awards

Online beach destination site Beach Tomato has launched the Beach Tomato Awards 2011, with categories in beach fashion, beach beauty and beaches around the world. The judging panel including co-founder Tom Marchant, editor Kirsty Hathaway and features editor Katie Mulloy, together with ELLE's travel editor Sue Ward Davies; showmeyourwardrobe.com founder and photographer Jackie Dixon; and the threegraces.com founder and beauty journalist, Grace Timothy, will decide the winners.

Observer Ethical Awards Winners announced

The Observer Ethical Awards 2011 have been announced at the V&A Museum, honouring the work of those who champion environmental and social justice. The judges selected winners that represent the best in ethical living and show an innovative approach to working towards a more sustainable future. Derbyshire-based hat brand Pachacuti was awarded in the fashion and accessories category and is the first company in the world to be accredited by the World Fair Trade Organisation. Graduate Fashion Awards winners announced

The Graduate Fashion Awards took place yesterday as part of Graduate Fashion Week at Earls Court, London. The main prize, The Gold Award, was presented to Rory Longdon from Nottingham Trent University (pictured here). Other key winners on the night included Marissa Owen from the University of Central Lancashire who was named as winner of the Womenswear Award, while Felix Chabluk Smith from Edinburgh College of Art received the menswear award. BFC announces NEWGEN recipients for SS12

The British Fashion Council (BFC) has announced the names of 17 of London’s fashion design talents who have been selected to receive BFC NEWGEN sponsorship, supported by Topshop, to show at London Fashion Week in September.

2011 CFDA Fashion Awards presented In New York

The 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards took place last night in New York, USA. The annual event recognises contributions made to American fashion, with awards being given for design excellence in womenswear, menswear and accessories as well as accomplishments in journalism, creative vision and lifetime achievement.

The evening’s Womenswear Designer of the Year award went to Jack McCollough & Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler presented by actress Naomi Watts. The award for Menswear Designer of the Year was presented by actor Gerard Butler to Michael Bastian. Lady Gaga was the recipient of The Fashion Icon Award, presented by Stephen Gan of Harper’s Bazaar, Visionaire, and V Magazine.

There was also three Swarovski Awards, which recognize emerging talent. The Swarovski Award for Womenswear was given to Prabal Gurung and the Swarovski Award for Menswear was presented to Robert Geller. Recipients in each category will receive financial support from the company as well as exposure to crystal products and applications for fashion.

Amanda Wakeley & Lucy Yeomans among judges for the GFW Gold Award

Graduate Fashion Week is celebrating its 20th year anniversary and has announced the judging panel for its coveted Graduate Fashion Week Gold Award. The judges for this year’s award will be: Amanda Wakeley; creative director Norton & Sons Patrick Grant; E.Tautz; editor of Harpers Bazaar Lucy Yeomans, and design director of George Fiona Lambert.

The judges will review ten shortlisted collections made from 19 catwalk shows and put the students through a gruelling interview process, before selecting the winner of the £20,000 prize money. They will also select a Menswear and Womenswear award winner. To ensure that none of the event’s catwalk talent is missed, an elite industry panel of preliminary judges is in place to join the audience at every university show to highlight what they consider to be the best collection from each show. The judges include: GFW Trustee Professor Wendy Dagworthy; Paul Smith Head of Womenswear Sandra Hill; Mark Eley (Eley Kishimoto); and Head of design from George at Asda Sadie Robson. The Preliminary judges will also select from nominations for the BHM Visionary Knitwear Award and Zandra Rhodes Catwalk Textile Awards.

Winners announced for the P&G Beauty & Grooming Awards

The seventh annual P&G Beauty & Grooming Awards took place last night (2 June) at BAFTA. The awards were created by P&G Beauty & Grooming to reward the talented and creative within the beauty and grooming industry, and to continue to demonstrate its commitment and passion to the UK Beauty and Grooming sector.


This year the awards were hosted by TV presenter George Lamb and guest who attended included editors, publishers, and potential award-winning beauty and grooming journalists and bloggers. Also present were key industry figures and this year’s judging panel representing the world of beauty, style, fashion and literature. The expert panel for 2011 comprised: Professor Louise Wilson OBE (MA Fashion Course Director, Central Saint Martins); Maggie Alderson (ex-editor of ELLE, ES Magazine and Best Selling Author); Kim Hunt (Creative Director and Writer); and Marie Helvin (Model and Author).
