Wednesday Featured Fashion: Garden Party

Name
: Kayla
College: Sixth
Year: 1st
Major: Sociology
Spotted At: Sixth College Res Halls

Outfit:
Light Purple Cardigan: Uniqlo
Floral Romper: Korea
Polka Dot Bow: Etsy
Black Combat Boots: store in Melrose
Glasses: Cotton On

Q: How would you describe your fashion?
A: I would describe my style as feminine and comfortable. I just wear whatever that comes to mind that day so I don't really have a style. I just wear a mixture of all types of trends and whatever suits my taste that day.
Q: What is your favorite piece you are wearing?
A: I really like my bow because I love the polka dot print right now and it made my outfit look really feminine.
Q: What's your favorite thing about spring?
A: My favorite thing about spring is that I can finally wear pretty floral dresses and mix it with other prints.

Kayla's outfit is a perfect transition from the cold, dreary weather of winter quarter to the warm, light breezes of spring quarter. She paired a floral romper, which perfectly emulates the season's aura, with combat boots to tone down the sometimes overdone floral prints. Kayla also has used the trend of mixing/matching prints, done so with her floral and polka dots, and has successfully matched them together without clashing.

Suggestion: Spring is the perfect time to bring out your soft-toned cardigans, as Kayla did, and pair it with floral prints. It is also a really big trend this season to mix/match various types of prints so don't be afraid to try out new styles!

InSPRINGation

With spring coming up, one needs to start dressing for the weather and the perfect way to do that is by wearing florals! To transition from fall/winter into spring, you can wear a floral dress but of course you don't want your florals to be too bold so by pairing it with a blazer and some nice vintage oxfords it can even out the bright colors. Spring and florals are all about happy colors but sometimes it can be too happy and obnoxious. And by finding the right accessories, you can create a great outfit that perfectly emulates the transition from fall/winter into spring!

Thakoon Vamps Up His Models with Fabric Woven Hair

This New York Fashion Week, Thakoon added a tribal twist to his models messy updo by adding in multi-colored fabric. Thakoon's Fall 2011 Collection has been considered a mash-up of Marie Antoinette and a Maasai warrior. His eccentric clothing was a great hit but it was also the hair that added the finishing touch to the theme of this collection.

Dare to Harem ?

Friday: Muse
By: Monica, TREND writer

Are you too tired to dress for class but still want to look cute? Harem pants are definitely the way to go as they are starting to make a big statement on college campuses. And just because they're comfortable doesn't mean they're cute! One could even consider them as the sweatpants for the college fashionista.

These pants have been compared to the likes of MC Hammer and Aladdin but when worn with the right accessories, harem pants can really compliment your figure and your outfit can look amazing! Also, these pants are a great way to make a bohemian statement (top) as they have the billowy, care-free feeling to them but you can also makes these pants edgy as Ciara has done (bottom).

Harem pants have even been spotted in street fashion during New York Fashion Week this past week and on other celebrities as well.

While there are mixed reviews about harem pants and their unique shape, these pants are still fierce and anyone can rock them as long as they pull it off with complimentary items and of course, confidence!

Harem pants can be purchased at Urban Outfitters and Forever 21.

Breezy Doin' It Big

FRIDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Monica, TREND Staff Writer

Even with an indisputable mishap that ruined his image, Chris Brown is still recognized for his amazing talent in many aspects such as singing and dancing. Recently, he has shown a different side of himself in a more artistic sense. In the pictures above, Chris teamed up with Australian graffiti specialist Kid Zoom to collaborate on some art pieces.

Chris stated "Art was my only outlet. Aside from music, art is the thing that I like to escape. And I appreciate other artists who have that talent and that eye for detail and eye for their own imagination. Art is a part of my life and it influences me completely.”

While looking at the pieces he created, one can assume that his inspirations came from his every day experiences. Additionally, his art is also reflected in his fashion sense as both are independent and unique to himself. He says that when you think about style, it's what you basically bring to it and that's exactly what he did with the murals he created. His ideas for music, art, and fashion are all incorporated into one which makes Chris Brown the fashionable icon that he is today.

Chris always states that "The clothes don't wear you. You wear the clothes." Fans should try to replicate this mindset since fashion is all about how you present yourself. It's also about what you are trying to say by the way you piece your clothes together. It's all about making a statement and that's what Chris continually does whether it be through music, art, or fashion.

"Freaky Girl"

FRIDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Monica, TREND Staff Writer

Nicki Minaj was recently on the cover of V Magazine for the Spring 2011 issue and she definitely showed off her eccentric and daring style. The photoshoot features Nicki in a variety of unique, statement clothing which presents her fierce nature. She wears colorful, tribal-esque body paint while dressed in a brightly printed Versace dress that hugs her bodacious curves (top). She also rocks the Azzedine Alaïa booties with an Emilio Pucci bodysuit while donning her signature pink lipstick (bottom).

Nicki has always been known for her fearless attitude and powerful persona as a woman. She is all about individualizing herself and does not let anyone create her or dress her for the matter. Also, according to her Twitter, Nicki stated "It's safe to say my cover shoot in V Magazine is dedicated to my gays and fashionistas. My most bad ass shoot to date."

She says that great fashion sense should always be "cooky or weird". She emphasizes that one should not be normal when it comes to fashion in order to be seen as a strong and independent individual.

Nicki's fan base adored the photo shoot and loved the edginess of the character she portrayed in the photographs. While there were mixed reviews about the body paint being a bit controversial, it's safe to say that Nicki knows how to stir things up and go crazy with her sense of style!
