Daisy Dukes White Top on Top

Name: Daisy
College: Revelle
Major: Psychology
Spotted At: Goody's Place and Market

Outfit:
Brown sugar brown jacket
: "I almost got nothing here, I got this jacket in Korea."
Button Down Top: Korea
Short shorts: Urban Oufitters
Sheer Tights: Forever 21
Zig Zag Bag: Metro Park
Fringe Binge Shoes: Wild Pear

Q: How would you describe your fashion?
A: Really girly! I usually wear subdued colors, flowy clothes and comfy clothes. I try to wear plain tops with lots of accessories. But I really like prints as well.
Q: What is your favorite piece you are wearing?
A: My white top. I like that it works with so many different kinds of outfits.

Miss Daisy's outfit is "grade A" fashion. With her comfy jacket matching her shoes and ease of mobility of the outfit, nobody could have done it better. Her purse may be zig-zaged out, but her simple outfit allows her to wear the bag tactfully without hurting your eyes with crazy patterns.

Suggestion: Daisy couldn't be more right. A white top is such a versatile, must-have item in your closet. You can change it's look by wearing a belt, or putting on wildly colorful jewelry.

UCSD's Best Dressed: These Boots are Made for Walkin'

Name: Tiffany (Girls with this name must be naturally fashionable. Last weeks best dressed was named Tiffany too!)
Major: Bio-Chemistry
College: ERC
Year: 2nd
Spotted: Outside Solis Hall

Q: Do you get your fashion inspiration from anywhere in particular?
A: I read a lot of magazines but editorials are usually pretty out-there. You can't really wear that stuff in real life. So I guess I try to see if there is a certain style they are kind of going for. But usually if I am just out shopping I will see things I like and then take them home and try to put them together.

Sequined grey scarf: Bloomingdales
Super awesome boots: Ugg Australia
Striped sweater: Martin+Osa (a former branch of American Eagle that is no longer in business)
Dress/tunic: Forever 21
Silver buckle belt: Urban Outfitters

Tiffany's outfit caught my eye right away. Her boots which you can find here at Nordstrom are extremely eye catching. Surprisingly, they are made by Ugg, which can normally associated with comfort, not fashion. But who is to say you can't have both? She did an amazing job pairing her boots with a simple black tunic and cardigan. A similar long cardigan can be found at American Eagle.
The blue stripes on Tiffany's cardigan add just a hint of color. This is perfect as because as the color getts added in, Spring slowly does too! A solid colored cardigan can achieve the same effect too. The belt she added is adorable and the perfect accent to the rest of her outfit. It makes the whole look seem very put together.
The scarf and tights kept her warm and looked great. Onnce Spring officially gets here, all she has to do is store them in her closet and the rest of her outfit is warm-weather ready!

UCSD's Best Dressed: Sheer Genius

Name: Tiffany
College: Muir
Major: International Studies Econ
Year: 3rd
Spotted: 1st Arriba Shuttle Stop

Q: So where do you get most of your fashion inspiration from? People you see, magazines, etc?
A: Probably both. Right now most of my clothes are from Asia (she visits every summer), so when people ask where something comes from, I usually have to say 'Oh, Taiwan'. But that is probably where most of it comes from right now.

White sheer blouse: Bought in Taiwan, you can get a similar look with this top from Express
Black Boots: "From one of the vendors on campus!"
Messenger bag: Forever 21
Bow ring: A similar one can be found at Nordstrom

Tiffany's outfit caught my eye right away, and the whole look makes me yearn for warmer weather! Her sheer blouse with the petal appliques is gorgeous, whimsical, and it practically screams "Spring!". I am just upset that I can't find one here in the states. Since it is still pretty cold outside despite the sun, Tiffany picked a light-weight black cardigan to keep her warm. It looks adorable paired with the cute black shorts she chose. I love that she paired the shorts with black slouchy boots; it is a refreshing change from the sandals or sneakers that we usually see worn with shorts. Adding the black messenger bag and slipping on an adorable bow adorned ring just made the outfit that much more special. Hopefully if she keeps up the warm weather style, the temperature will take the hint and heat up already! Lovely job Miss Tiffany!

The Man's Got Style

Name: Oliver
Major: Poli-Sci
College: Revelle
Year: 4th
Spotted by: 202 bus stop on Gilman

Q: So where does a stylish guy like yourself get his fashion inspiration from?
A: Probably two places. My dad [who Oliver told us hails from the UK], and vintage style from the 50's. The Rat Pack, Cary Grant, it's all very sophisticated.

Smart-looking Pea Coat: Calvin Klein
Heather-grey Cardigan: John Smedley
Cotton button-down: H&M
Navy trousers: J Crew
Boat shoes: Sperry Topsider
Black tie: Vintage ("from my dad!")

It was very exciting to finally find a guy who deserved the title of UCSD's best dressed. And all the gents at UCSD should take notes from Oliver. His style is classic and preppy, but he has put himself together in an unmistakably modern way. He is also one of the few guys I have seen who can pull off a tie outside of the workplace. By only fastening one button of his cardigan, he ensures that he looks pulled together without looking too uptight. His black pea coat is a much more stylish choice than the typical UCSD sweatshirt that 90% of the dudes on campus wear and is perfect for those weird, sunny-but-freezing days that we've been experiencing. And the boat shoes are a surprising touch that work perfectly with his preppy/hipster vibe. Bravo!

Ms. Vintage

UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer

Name: Justine
Major: Human Biology
College: Warren
Year: 3rd
Spotted at: Warren Plaza

Outfit:
Smart Glasses:
Dior
Poppy Yellow Big Button Jacket: A thrift store in San Fransisco called "Crossroads" (there's one in SD too)
Elegantly Embellished Dress: Charlotte Russe
Scholarly Book Bag: An outlet in Oregon
Sheer Flats : Urban Outfitters
Eco Friendly Bag: purchased right here at UCSD

Q: Where does your fashion inspiration derive from?
A: Well, I have to say I love vintage. I read fashion blogs and I notice there is a different aesthetic in the regular use of clothing. Reading them helps me decide what to look for in a thrift store. Right now, I am looking for "springy things".
Oh! And I am really into looking to Steve Allen for inspiration.

Justine did fabulous job of keeping things cheery and effervescent. I love the fact that upon observing her outfit, I can't readily decide if she looks ready for school or ready to run in the flowers! The yellow is just so honeycomb yellow that it's practically spring in a jacket! Her dress is black, a typically less frivolous color, but the embellishments on it make it super sweet and super cute. The bag and the glasses are so studious and seem serious when taken away from the rest of the outfit. However, both the bag and glasses make the outfit solid with their academic feel.

Isn't She Lovely? Isn't She Wonderful?

UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bria, TREND Staff Writer

Name: Rebecca
College: ERC
Major: Bio Engineering
Year: 5th
Spotted: In Price Center Counrtyard

Seeing as Valentine's Day is around the corner, this blogger decided to look for a cute and nicely dressed couple to feature for the best dressed. Rebecca was spotted hand-in-hand with a dashing young man, but he was not excited about having his picture taken. After some gentle coaxing from Rebecca ("Trevor get in the *$#& picture!) he still wasn't having it. Luckily, Miss Rebecca is smartly dressed and can hold her own in a photo. Her adorable black trench is from Express and her red-wine colored scarf is from Wilson's Leather.

Q: So what are your plans for Valentine's Day?
A: I don't really know...He is taking me to a "great dinner and a classy time" supposedly, but he won't tell me where.

Q: Any idea what you're going to wear?
A: Yess...I bought an outfit... I got a new dress from Express and some red heels!

Trevor must be a lucky guy!

Lazy Day Chic

UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bria, TREND Staff Writer

Name
: Catherine
Major: Communications
College: Warren
Year: 4th
Spotted: Outside the MCC building

Outfit:
Sneakers:
Urban Outfitters
Denim cut-offs: "Old Navy I think...but they were jeans and I cut them into shorts"
Pinstriped button-down: Forever 21
Oversized Cardigan: Urban Outfitters
Black Quilted Lap-top bag: Urban Outfitters
Funky Rings: All different places. "The big one (the flowered one) was a gift, I think the others are from Forever 21, I usually get my jewelry from there."

Q: So where does most of your style inspiration come from?
A: My style is influenced primarily from street style and I look at blogs like Facehunter and The Sartorialist for inspiration. I also really like looking at Rachel Bilson and Carey Mulligan for inspiration--I also love Anna Karina's French, 1960's style!

Catherine is in style with her beautiful accessory rings, which Lavanya wrote about in yesterday's blog. They truly can dress up any outfit. Her denim shorts are adorable and even better since they were a DIY project. She makes sure her outfit isn't too "Daisy Duke" by pairing her mini shorts with a cute, over-sized cotton button down and a cardigan in a gorgeous hue. Her laptop bag is casual but chic, and very versatile so she can use it with any outfit she wears to school. While she no doubt looks comfortable, she still manages to look stylish, which we all know can be a difficult combination to manage.

She's like one of our own!

UCSD's Best Dressed: Orange County Edition
Discovered by: Bria, TREND Staff Writer

Happy Wednesday everyone!
My name is Bria and I am a recent addition to TREND's staff. I will be doing the Wednesday Best Dressed this quarter! I can't wait to share with you the best of the best!

Hopefully your winter break was fabulous and fashion-filled! Seeing as everyone (including myself) was home for the holidays for the past few weeks, I decided to do an Orange County edition of best dressed. Our neighbors to the north have almost as many fashionistas as we have down here! One lady that fits in perfectly with the best-dressed crowd in San Diego is 20 year old, Tatiana. Her blend of classic style with modern twists is oh-so-chic, and her neutral color pallet is perfect for this cold winter weather.

Black skinny jeans: Paige Premium Denim

Grey cardigan: Forever 21

Flowy white tank: Forever 21

Knee-high socks: H&M

Combat boots: Vintage, but you can find similar ones here

Cognac-colored satchel: Urban Outfitters

  • Name: Tatiana
  • Spotted at: The Irvine Spectrum
  • Occupation?: Full-time student at Orange Coast College
  • Tell me about your style: I love basics, a great sweater or pair of jeans, but then make them my own with accessories. I love funky accessories.
  • So who is your biggest style icon? Rachel Bilson. Hands down. I love her.
  • Any other inspirations? Well, my sister owns a vintage store in New York, so i get a lot of pieces from her. You can find tons of classic pieces but also really unique and interesting ones.*

X's and O's,
B.

*Her sister's store: The Greedy Seagull

Life in Technicolor

College: Revelle
Spotted By: Peterson Hall

Outfit:
Sweet Accent Sunglasses:
Vintage Chanel
Very Blue Shirt: China
Magnificently Magenta Scarf: Bloomingdales
Cowgirly Boots: Zappos

Q: How do you like to dress on a daily basis?
A: Well, I never follow the same style each day. It's whatever I feel like. Actually, it depends on the weather. If it's cloudy, I like to dress colorful to cheer myself up. I love color!

I cannot pretend to feel impartial about colors. I rejoice with the brilliant ones and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns. ~Winston Churchill

Science n' Fashion

UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer

Name: Connie
Major: Chemical Engineering
Minor: Literature
College: Marshall
Year: 5th
Spotted On: Library Walk

Outfit:
Wraparound Sunnies:
Macys (Marc Jacobs)
Berry Red Jacket: Nordstrom
Growing Abstract Flowers Scarf: Taiwan "My Aunt gave it to my mom and then I stole it from my mother."
Sweet Sweater Dress: Urban Outfitters
Tights: Urban Outfitters "it's so hard to find opaque tights and Urban has them! I go through a lot of them."

Q: When you go shopping, what appeals to you in buying an item?
A: Comfort appeals to me. I rarely wear jeans because I don't find them to be comfortable! It's funny though, what I wear depends on what classes I am going to, for Lit I usually dress up a bit but not for Engineering because they don't really dress up that much!

When putting an outfit together, matching is sometimes not all that easy, especially if we have an eclectic wardrobe. Connie is perfectly matching from head to toe. Greys and blues and red are the colors that make up her shoes, jacket, scarf and well, just about everything. The color block on the back of the dress is an especially sweet matching surprise.
Just feeling polished can help sweeten your attitude to a much more positive disposition (which is especially helpful during finals!)

Threads of History

UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer

Name: Marina
College: Revelle
Major: Microbiology
Year: Senior
Spotted Near : RIMAC

Outfit:
Feather Earrings:
Random Vendor
Comfortable Colorful Sweater: "It used to be my grandmothers"
The Essential Black Shirt: Forever 21
Black Tights: H&M
Brown Boots: Steve Madden
Silver Watch:
"Las Vegas!"

Q: What is your general type of style? How would you describe it?
A: "A comfy, relaxed style. A style that doesn't require too much work, but still looks good. I would say I like to keep it fresh!

Marina does an excellent job of esablishing her own unique style that's relaxed while still, "keeping it fresh". Especially as finals are looming overhead, we all could care less about what we wear we just hope we can get to class on time with assignments successfully in hand! Through the simple act of putting on matching earrings Marina effortlessly dressed up her look. Instead of a plain o' sweatshirt, she chose a colorful piece to cheer the gloom of the skies that hovers above us. Additionally, what is more comforting than having an article of clothing your very dear grandmother wore!

C'est Magnifique

UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer

Name
: Maggie
Graduate Student
Orginally from: San Fransisco
Major: Literature
Spotted Near : Geisel Library

Outfit:
Brilliant Green Blouse:
Anthropologie
Nostalgic Necklace: Gift from Mother
Chic Glasses: DKNY
Simply black skirt: Thrift Store
Tights: "Yoga tights from my closet!"
Combat Boots: Nordstrom

Q: Who or what is your fashion influence?
A: "Hmmm...definitely styles shown in French movies from the 60's! "

Although Maggie's green blouse is bright, it is not showy; it is both simple and modern. The French word "haute couture" means "trend-setting high fashion". Maggie is definitely a trend setter. People always say things sound cooler when the French say it, but in Maggie's case, it's her French Style that's c'est magnifique.

Let Loose the Houndstooth

UCSD's Best Dressed
Discovered by: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer
Name: Heather
College: Warren
Spotted Near : Pepper Canyon Hall

Outfit:
Hounds-tooth Jacket
: Buffalo Exchange in Haight and Ashbury S.F.
Dark as Night Dress: Nordstrom "It's unusual for me to shop there but I liked this! I love to wear dresses."
Diamond Patterned Bag: Target
Black Ballet Flats: Charlotte Russe
Wonderfully Vintage Rings: "They were my mom's in the 70's"

Q: What is your take on fashion?
A: It always changes. Mood has a lot to do with that. Also, depending what my friends are into, I'll look into their stuff. We share our clothes and get ideas from each other.

Adding one touch of color to your outfit sometimes gives the added flair to an otherwise simple outfit. In this case, the black and orange cardigan complements the black ensemble, giving the outfit a very finished look.
