"Alexander the Great"

MONDAY MUSE
Designer Sarah Burton is the new creative director at Alexander McQueen. The collection shown above for Vogue US's January 2011 issue, channels McQueen surprisingly well. Especially following McQueen's tragic death in February, Alexander McQueen's designs have become the epitome of fashion design almost unattainably perfect to replicate.

Burton's designs are exquisite. Along with black, the colors in the collection are akin to autumn leaves. From bright yellows to dark browns when the leaves begin to crackle.

Chica Chica Boom Chic

MONDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer
The Portuguese-born Brazilian Carmen Miranda is famously known as "the banana lady". Miranda was the Brazilian Bomb Shell of the 1940s and 50s, singing and dancing and acting in 14 different Hollywood films including The Gang's All Here where her fruit hat gained world fame.

Miranda has become a style icon. She is everything: ruffled, fruity, bold floral and topical. Her wardrobe is alive with creativity. Juicy red delicious beads, banana colored sleeves and a sweet smile are things to incorporate if you want to dress Carmen-esque.

Miss Lindsey Wixson: the Muse of Many

MONDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Bridgett, TREND Staff Writer

Remember those high school years when you wanted to look your very best for school? Planning outfits for the next day and waking up early to fix your hair was so important. When 16 year old model Lindsey Wixson wakes up, she has to dress to impress for a slightly larger crowd. Some days, Wixon prepares for model go-sees while other days, she must get ready to walk the runway for designers such Lanvin, Tommy Hilfiger, Victoria Beckham, and even Louis Vuitton.

Talk about yearbook pictures. Miss Wixon has also graced the covers of Vogue Italia, Vogue Turkey, Vogue Paris and an innumerable amount of other acclaimed magazines. Photographer Gabrielle Revere says Wixson's " got something, she's got that thing that defines people". She is an undeniable beauty with her lush lips, soft eyes, and overall unique face. Although, in many interviews, her shy but confident personality is what is exceptionally flattering to all who meet her.

Miss Wixon is definitely living a true teenage dream.

Hem and Her

MONDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Addie, TREND Staff Stylist

Economy got you down? Hemlines are also cascading down this fall season. During times of economic wealth skirt lines get higher. One would think that less money means less clothing, but there is significant evidence for hemlines rising with the economy.

This trend is called the "hemline index". Economist George Taylor created this theory. Although it was created in 1926, this theory still holds true through stock market lows and highs. In much of 2010's fall collections, the longer hemline either echoes the 1950s fitted dresses or 1970's maxi dresses.

There is an excellent article about this topic here.

Double Take Blake

MONDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Addie, TREND Staff Stylist
23 year old Blake Lively is not only an actress and model, but she has become a fashion icon. She has graced the covers of a considerable stack of magazines including Vogue, Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, and Nylon. She can pull of almost any type of outfit, whether it is business, dressy or a combination of both.

Her blond locks have become iconic and are the envy of many. Esquire's staff writer Ryan D'Agostino describes her hair as being like Brigitte Bardot's. Unlike Bardot though, Blake plays a delicate balance between sex symbol and a sophisticated young woman.

LANVIN - H&M

MONDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Alice, TREND Staff Co-Editor

The upcoming designer Alber Elbaz of the French Couture house Lavin, is the next one in line to be featured at H&M. H&M has been featuring designers for a while: this is not new news. The reason why Lavin's participation is so monumental is because Elbaz is almost exclusively couture and with couture, comes a pretty price-tag. Alber is bringing high fashion to a lower price.

The anticipated collection will feature 30 pieces. And let me tell you, his collection definitely does not look cheap. There is not doubt that this collection with sell out.

Muse over the idea of what kind of fashion possibilities could be possible if all types of clothing were affordable to the general public.

“f it’s not edible, it’s not food. If it’s not wearable, it’s not fashion.”-Elbaz

Irreverent Luxury

MONDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Addie, TREND Stylist

When you see the bubblegum pink hair, you may be reminded of Zhandra Rhodes (from last week's post on Monday), but this post is all about Miss Tarina Tarantino: "The Queen of Irreverent Luxury". She specializes in accessories such as jewelry, makeup and perfume. She has a barbie made after her too! Her saucy bold nature is echoed by bursts of color in her collections.

What I love most about Tarantino's work are her collections that follow themes. The Wizard of Oz collection is my personal favorite. I think it is appropriate that she chose this theme because of the movie's most awe-inspiring part: when the story transitions from black and white to bold technicolor. Tarantino's color is also bewilderingly beautiful.

Wouldn't you love to visit a Tarina Tarantino Botique and experience the beauteous collection yourself? You can! There is one in L.A.

Colour Colour Colour Colour

MONDAY MUSE
Recommendation: Addie, TREND Stylist
British Designer Zandra Rhodes is anything but plain. Her designer collections are heavy with colors and wild patterns that seem to reflect her own zany, colorful personality. Although she primarily designs clothing, she also designs wrapping paper, jewelry and more recently in 2001 costumes for the opera (which happened to be the San Diego opera!). She has designed for an quite eclectic group that includes Vogue, Freddie Mercury, and Princess Diana.

When choosing between the gray tunic and the black tunic this week. Don't (or try not to!) Try to find something to brighten up your wardrobe. Add a splash of color! Accessories tend to do the trick. Try wearing a colorful feathered headband, a brilliant bright belt or colorful jewelry. Be bold this week ;)
